Arteriosclerosis/Atherosclerosis
SYMPTOMS. The chest pains of angina pectoris or coronary thrombosis may
occur. Also see ANGINA PECTORIS and CORONARY THROMBOSIS. Because arteries of
the leg may have been affected there may be pain in them while walking and
even at rest.
CAUSES. ARTERIOSCLEROSIS (also called hardening of the arteries) is an
overall term that includes atherosclerosis. In ATHEROSCLEROSIS the passage
way for blood has been narrowed by deposits that form on the inner lining of
the arteries. This is the most prevalent disease of the arteries.
TREATMENT. Certain factors may need to be corrected. Those include cigarette
smoking, lack of exercise, excess weight, high levels of cholesterol, high
blood pressure, poor thyroid functioning and diabetes.
.It may be helpful to consult a nutritionist.
